Japanese Mortar Bowl and Pestle
Japanese Mortar Bowl and Pestle
from $32.00
The Japanese “grinding bowl” (Suribachi) and hardwood pestle (Surikogi) are still commonly found in Japanese kitchens. The Suribachi can be used for many things from grinding spices, nuts and seeds to making pestos or guacamole.
Working closely with traditional craftsmen, the young designers of Mujun re-imagine products for modern living. They care greatly not just about the craft itself, but also about the tools and materials used. The mortar bowl is made from ceramic with a glazed exterior and an unglazed interior scored with spiraling ridges. The pestle is made from wood in the walnut family called Pterocarya, native to Asia. The deep sides and silicone footing are helpful features.
Fun fact: The highest mountain on Iwo Jima, Mount Suribachi, was named after this kitchen device.
